About Us
After a 34-year hiatus, football finally returned to Dalhousie University in Sept 2010. The Dalhousie Football Club was born, now as a club team competing in the new Atlantic Football League.
DFC entered the second season of the AFL (founded 2009), competing against the original teams, UNB Fredericton Red Bombers (now known as the Reds), UNB Saint John Seawolves, Holland College Hurricanes, and Moncton Mustangs.
The return of the team was made possible by the leadership of some keen Dal Alumni, our volunteer coaching, Student Football Club executives and players, and the financial support of our Founders Club and sponsors.
The Dalhousie team is the only team in the AFL that requires all of its players to be full-time students. We have also made a commitment to safety one of our driving goals, becoming the first University Football team in Canada to roll out Riddell Smart Helmets to all our players, as well as being an early adopter of Guardian Caps during our practices (which have since been mandated by the NFL during practices, and permitted during games).
After making it to the Moosehead Cup finals twice, the Tigers won their first AFL title in 2016 during the team’s 70th anniversary. The 2016 Tigers went on an 8-0 undefeated run, outscoring their opponents 306-33.
Since then, the Tigers have won three more Moosehead Cups: In 2018, 2021, and 2022.
Our involvement on campus has also been substantial, having collaborated with other clubs and teams at Dalhousie University, including the cheerleading team, Dal Dance Society, Dalhousie Choir, and many more. We still have an expansive Student-Run executive team handling much of the administration of the club, game day operations, finance, and marketing activities. Our student trainer program continues to give valuable experience to health science students as they progress towards their career.
